Men and women live in a giant underground silo with different rules that they believe protect them from a toxic and broken world. Whether they’re exploring the stars, escaping dystopias, or making the world a better place, these women are the stuff of science fiction. Season 1 covers the first 30 chapters of The Wool – a book totaling 82 chapters. The fans on the floor rotate in the wrong direction compared to the orientation of the blades in various episodes. It’s an interesting underground bunker story about people who have survived underground for so long that a civilization has emerged within it, with traditions, myths, beliefs, rituals and ceremonies rooted in forgotten events and creating a status quo social structure. And when the status quo that maintains order is challenged, execution and punishment follow. A power structure develops that creates a stratified population, both figuratively and literally, from the top to the bottom of the silo. That’s the premise, and while it’s not entirely original (think Snowpiercer, Dark City, etc.), there’s enough innovation here that it feels well done for a TV series. Great acting from Oyelowo, familiar faces from Rashida Jones and Will Patton. (However, as you can see from the show’s poster, they are guest stars to give way to the regular cast with Rebecca Ferguson playing the title role.) The show looks to be pretty good, with good production values. There are elaborate sets and good CGI for a believable atmosphere. While a suspicious mind may spot some obvious conspiracies early on, there are secrets revealed that will keep me riveted to the screen.
