This summer, several Furman students have been preoccupied by stress, anxiety, trauma and fear – from an academic perspective, at least. The 15th annual Psychology and Neuroscience Summer Research Conference on July 26 highlighted studies on those topics and others, including memory, rest, taste and health behaviors. In two morning poster sessions in Plyler Hall, students displayed projects such as “Predator Odor Fear Conditioning Model of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Rats and Mice” and “Using Latent Class Analysis to Examine Behavior Patterns Among First-Year College Students.” Attendees of an afternoon session saw presentations like “Resting State EEG Correlates of Memory Consolidation in ADHD” and “The Impact of Taste Experience During Early Development on Latent Taste and Neural Processing.” Finally, students and faculty wrapped the afternoon up with the ultimate brain food: ice cream sundaes.

PsychologyIn the early 1990s, British neuroscientist Karl Friston was poring over brain scans. The scans produced terabytes of digital output, and Friston had to find new techniques to sort and classify the massive flows of data.
Along the way he had a revelation. The techniques he was using might be similar to what the brain itself was doing when it processed visual data.
Could it be he had stumbled upon a solution to a data engineering problem that nature had discovered long ago? Friston’s eureka moment led to a “theory of everything”, which claims to explain the behaviour of the brain, the mind, and life itself.
As we discovered when we put together a collection of papers, the theory – known as the “free energy principle” – is controversial among scientists and philosophers.
Friston’s initial idea was appealing because the problem facing the brain is similar to that facing an experimental scientist. Both must use the data they have to draw conclusions about events they cannot observe directly.
The neuroscientist uses scan data to infer facts about brain processes. The brain uses sensory input to infer facts about the external world.
The algorithm Friston used to draw conclusions from his data – a mathematical operation called “minimising free energy” – was based on existing techniques in statistical analysis.
Karl Friston thought the method he used to interpret brain scans might be the same as the method the brain itself used to interpret visual data.

Friston (and others such as computer scientist Geoff Hinton) realised artificial neural networks could easily carry out this operation. And if artificial neural networks could do it, perhaps biological neural networks could too.
But Friston didn’t stop there. He reasoned that the problem of drawing conclusions from limited information is a problem faced by all living things.
This led him to the “free energy principle”: that every living thing, everywhere, minimises free energy.
But what, exactly, is free energy? Why might all living things minimise it?
Start with a simpler idea: every organism is trying to minimise how surprising its experiences are. By “surprising”, we mean experiences that have not been encountered …….

YogaDetroit — On Wednesday nights throughout the summer, dozens have sprawled out across Spirit of Detroit Plaza for relaxing sessions focused on routines aimed at boosting health.
Through next month, city-based Trap Yoga and Massage Studio hosts “Yin Night” at the downtown spot.
Touted as a “sunset yogic experience,” the free weekly event now attracts hundreds of people from all walks of life, the organizer said.
They include those like India Respress, 19, who attended her first session on a recent evening.
Now the Redford Township resident believes everyone should experience the outing at least once.
“I got to meet so many wonderful people and just let loose. As a college student, and even just being a young adult trying to figure out life, this session helped put my mind at ease, even if it was just for an hour,” said Respress, who attends Henry Ford College. “Life right now is just crazy, so the hour of relaxation and being able to tap into my inner peace was well needed.”
The gatherings started after city officials contacted Jamel Randall, owner of the Trap Yoga & Massage Studio, in December about hosting yoga sessions at the Spirit of Detroit Plaza during the warmer months.
“They reached out to me about activating the space,” he said. “They kind of gave me free rein to do whatever I wanted to do, which I love.”
The event is free and participants are encouraged to bring their own yoga mat and water.
“Yin Night is an opportunity for people to come together as a community,” Randall said. “I want people to feel more open and able to flow. The concept of yin is surrendering to the moment and the now, not so much tied into what you look like, what you feel or your thoughts, you can let all of those things go.”
Alexus Johnson, 22, of Detroit loved attending for the first time recently.
“The atmosphere …….
