ChargePoint and Powers Parts Partner to Enhance EV Bus Charging and Support
ChargePoint, a leading electric vehicle (EV) charging network provider, has partnered with Powers Parts, a national distributor of electric vehicle components and fleet replacement parts, to address the charging and support gap facing transit fleets operating PhoenixEV electric buses.
The Challenge
Transit agencies using former Proterra E2 and ZX5 electric buses are struggling with service and infrastructure issues due to Proterra’s 2023 bankruptcy. The new partnership aims to streamline this process by offering a comprehensive solution through Powers Parts’ existing distribution network.
Key Aspects of the Partnership:
- Charging Hardware, Software, and Telematics: ChargePoint’s DC fast charging infrastructure, fleet management software, and telematics services will be available to transit agencies through Powers Parts’ network.
- Integrated Platform: ChargePoint’s telematics platform provides real-time insights into battery health, route efficiency, and total cost of ownership, regardless of the charging station manufacturer. It is OCPP compliant, allowing it to manage both third-party hardware and ChargePoint stations.
- Support for Mixed-Fuel Fleets: The telematics system can manage mixed-fuel fleets, including diesel, compressed natural gas, and electric buses, through a unified interface. This is crucial as many transit agencies electrify their fleets gradually.
Background: The Proterra Bankruptcy
Proterra, once a prominent US electric bus manufacturer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2023 after years of financial losses. Its transit bus division was acquired by Phoenix Motorcars, now known as PhoenixEV, for $3.5 million. Volvo purchased Proterra’s battery and powertrain division separately, while the charging infrastructure business was sold separately.
This partnership between ChargePoint and Powers Parts offers a solution to the challenges faced by transit agencies post-Proterra bankruptcy, ensuring better service and support for their electric bus fleets.
