Avrea Raises $4.7M to Revolutionize CI/CD Before AI Coding Overwhelms It

The Helsinki startup Avrea, founded by Aiven’s Hannu Valtonen and Nosto’s Juha Valvanne, is anticipating the future of AI-generated code and its impact on existing build pipelines. They are aiming to provide a faster, AI-aware alternative to GitHub Actions for engineering teams grappling with the speed gap between code generation and delivery.
Earlybird led the pre-seed funding round with $4.7 million, recognizing the potential of Avrea’s innovative approach. Paul Klemm, Earlybird general partner and former Aiven executive, expressed his confidence: "Backing Hannu a second time was an easy decision… With Juha and a team deeply experienced in building for developers, Avrea is uniquely positioned to define the future of software delivery."
Avrea’s continuous-integration platform seamlessly integrates with existing GitHub Actions workflows. It utilizes dedicated high-speed CPUs for CI tasks and incorporates AI technology to identify slow build steps, unstable tests, and outdated tools. The result is a significant acceleration in pipeline speed, claiming up to an 80% reduction in infrastructure costs.
A public benchmark on Ghostty demonstrated Avrea’s exceptional performance, completing builds 27 times faster than GitHub Actions, primarily through caching.
Hannu Valtonen explains the shift towards AI integration: "AI has removed the bottleneck of writing code… But testing and delivery still scale linearly with output." Juha Valvanne adds that the next challenge lies in integration, where AI agents directly interact with delivery systems, a trend confirmed by major CI vendors.
While some competitors offer faster CI runners, Avrea’s unique value proposition lies in its AI-driven observability, providing root cause analysis rather than mere failure messages. The company’s launch includes ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certifications, ensuring a strong security posture.
