Google Announces Pics: A Workspace-Native AI Image Generator
Google has unveiled Pics, a new AI image generator and editor integrated directly into Google Workspace. Powered by Nano Banana 2, Pics allows users to:
- Generate images from text prompts.
- Precise control over individual elements within a composition.
- Move, resize, or translate elements without regenerating the whole image.
- Modify and translate embedded text.
- Update specific regions of an image.
Key Features:
- Precision Editing: Pics aims to differentiate itself from rivals like Canva and Adobe Express by offering more precise control over image editing, challenging the "prompt-and-pray" approach of earlier AI generators.
- Workspace Integration: Pics will be built into Google Slides for in-deck image generation and editing, with creations saved directly to Google Drive.
- Rolling Out: Initially available through Google’s Workspace Experiments program and later for Workspace Business Standard and higher plans, as well as Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Technical Foundation:
- Based on Nano Banana 2, Google’s image model designed for precise text rendering, real-world knowledge, and detailed visual output.
- Extends the Nano Banana family, including Gemini app, focusing on precision use cases.
Competitive Landscape:
Pics joins a growing battleground of AI design tools, competing directly with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which generates faster but offers less direct control over post-generation edits.
