Amazon introduces the unified Alexa for Shopping assistant, combining Rufus and Alexa+, to power its main search flow. This move comes as Amazon defends its marketplace from external AI agents like Perplexity’s Comet.
Key Features of Alexa for Shopping:
- Conversational answers and product comparisons
- Up to a year of price history for products
- Personalized shopping guides
- Automation of reordering household staples
- Price tracking and alerts for new products
- Cart construction based on user preferences
Rufus, previously accessible through a separate icon, is now seamlessly integrated into the search interface. This change positions AI directly within the default search flow, mirroring Google’s AI Overviews.
Amazon emphasizes Alexa’s ability to complete multi-step tasks, describing it as "agentic".
Competitive Landscape:
- OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025, allowing ChatGPT to process purchases within its interface.
- Google is developing Buy for Me for Gemini and utilizes an A2A (agent-to-agent) protocol with numerous supporting organizations.
- Perplexity’s Comet offers a "Buy with Pro" feature via PayPal integration at over 5,000 merchants.
- Alibaba integrated its Qwen AI directly into Taobao for end-to-end agentic shopping in the previous quarter.
Amazon took legal action against Perplexity, alleging Comet accessed Amazon.com in violation of terms and disrupted ad measurement. A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction, which Perplexity is appealing. The dispute centers on agent access, but the core issue is capturing high-intent search queries at the top of the funnel.
