“Kodi Retires PPA for Ubuntu, Transitions to Flatpak for Future Builds”
The highly popular Kodi media player, known for its up-to-date and pure versions through the Personal Package Archives (PPA), has announced the retirement of this service. This decision was made due to the high maintenance overhead associated with it.
Instead, the Kodi Foundation will be using Flatpak for future applications, which not only makes it easier to maintain but also extends accessibility to a wider range of distributions than the PPA could.
While the transition to Flatpak does present challenges, the team is dedicated to ensuring the same level of quality and stability that the PPA offered to Linux users. They also plan to update their documentation to make the installation process more straightforward.
For those who prefer building from the source, this option will still be available along with other distributions. The official Kodi PPA was previously available for Ubuntu and its derivatives such as Lubuntu, Linux Mint, KodiBuntu, and XBMCbuntu.
