Fedora Linux to Become Immutable: New Onyx Variant Gets Approval

The Fedora Engineering and Steering Committee (FESCo) has given the green light for a new immutable variant of Fedora Linux, known as Fedora Onyx. This proposal, which centers around the Budgie Desktop Environment, was recently approved and will be rolled out in the upcoming Fedora 39 cycle.

Fedora Onyx: The Immutable Option for Budgie Fans

Similar to the existing Fedora Budgie spin, Fedora Onyx will offer users a desktop operating system with the popular Budgie environment. However, unlike its predecessor, it will be an immutable variant, similar to Fedora Silverblue and Fedora Kinoite which are based on the KDE desktop.

The approved proposal provides more details on what users can expect from Fedora Onyx:

“Fedora Onyx is designed to be an immutable desktop operating system, utilizing the same foundational technologies found in other Fedora immutable variants such as Silverblue, Kinoite, and Sericea. These technologies include flatpak, rpm-ostree, podman, and toolbx. With Fedora Onyx, we are targeting those who appreciate the Fedora platform and Budgie Desktop, but require the security and resilience offered by rpm-ostree, which is not available in traditional spins like the Fedora Budgie Spin.”

The decision to launch Fedora Onyx was met with unanimous approval from the FESCo members, solidifying its position as the latest addition to the Fedora family.
