Skoda Scala Hatch’s Future in Australia: A Decision Looms
The fate of the Skoda Scala hatchback in Australia is being decided, with a recent drop in sales raising questions about its long-term prospects. The hatchback, which outsold the Toyota Corolla 76 to one, could soon make way for new electric vehicles.
Sales Slump and Potential Axing
A decision on the Scala’s future is "slowly progressing," as sales hit a new low. Skoda Australia director Lucie Kuhn confirmed that the company is considering dropping the model from its lineup.
"It’s a subject of our current analysis and consideration." – Lucie Kuhn, Skoda Australia Director
Kuhn added that while the analysis has been ongoing for some time, they are unable to provide a timeline for a final decision.
Comparisons with Competitors
In contrast to the Scala’s struggles, Toyota Corolla hatchbacks sold 18,968 units last year in Australia, with Volkswagen Golf sales at 3047. Surprisingly, the Scala found success with rental car fleets, accounting for nearly half of its deliveries in 2024. However, this segment’s popularity is declining.
Fabia’s Resilience
The smaller Skoda Fabia city hatch, on the other hand, enjoyed a modest sales growth of 0.6% in 2025, outperforming the brand overall. Kuhn suggests there’s room for Fabia sales to grow despite the shrinking demand for city hatchbacks.
"I feel [Fabia] has a better potential… The segment is getting smaller, so it’s becoming harder to make this car really appealing." – Lucie Kuhn
