The SUV market experienced another robust month in March 2026, solidifying Tata Motors’ momentum in this segment. The Tata Punch emerged as the top performer, cementing its position in the SUV conversation. Across the broader utility vehicle market, the Punch, Nexon, Creta, Brezza, and Fronx dominated, illustrating the market’s concentration around a select few models.
Top 5 Selling SUVs in March 2026:
- Tata Punch: 20,919 units
- Tata Nexon: 21,557 units
- Hyundai Creta: 18,206 units
- Maruti Suzuki Brezza: 16,408 units
- Maruti Suzuki Fronx: 16,104 units
Collectively, these five SUVs accounted for an impressive 93,194 units in March, representing approximately 22% of the overall passenger vehicle market (around 4.16 lakh units). This highlights the significant role SUVs play in driving volume growth and brand image.
Punch: From Underdog to Volume Leader
The Tata Punch, launched in late 2021, has achieved remarkable success, crossing 7 lakh cumulative units by early 2026. Its fast growth is notable, especially for a model under five years old. The Punch offers both petrol and electric versions; the Punch EV has contributed to its monthly sales since its launch in January 2024.
- Petrol Punch: Rs 6.13 lakh – Rs 10.20 lakh
- Punch EV: Rs 9.99 lakh
The model’s wide price range makes it accessible to various buyer segments, from those considering hatchbacks and micro SUVs to compact SUV alternatives. Few competitors can match its broad appeal across different budgets.
The narrow gap between the Punch and Nexon (638 units) is noteworthy, as both models sell over 20,000 units monthly. This positions Tata with two high-volume SUVs in the same segment. Together, they contributed 42,476 units in March, underscoring Tata’s SUV dominance.
